RETREATS IN THAILAND

Retreat Notes

A few notes to ponder before choosing a retreat in Thailand.

Flower sketches, drawing pencils, ceramics, and a cup on a wooden table.
NOTE 01Chiang MaiJuly 2026

Arrival counts.

A retreat starts earlier than most people think.

Sometimes it starts at baggage claim.

You have been traveling for hours. Your phone is at 11 percent. Chiang Mai is warmer than wherever you came from. Someone is trying to remember which suitcase is theirs.

A good arrival feels simple.

Someone knows when you land. The driver knows your name. The room is ready. There is water. You know when you are eating. You know what is happening that evening.

Within an hour, people start to settle.

When looking at a Chiang Mai retreat, check the arrival details along with the schedule.

These are small details on a retreat page. They become very large after twenty hours of travel.

NOTE 02ThailandAugust 2026

Arrive before you need to.

If you are crossing twelve time zones to get to a retreat, arriving the same afternoon the program starts is ambitious.

Your body may still think it is Tuesday.

Your suitcase may be somewhere in Doha.

Give yourself a day if you can.

Take the shower. Eat something. Walk around. Buy the forgotten sunscreen. Figure out which way the jet lag is going.

Let Thailand become real before anyone asks you to introduce yourself in a circle.

A night before the retreat can cost a little more. It can also give you your first day back.

NOTE 03ThailandAugust 2026

Shared rooms deserve more attention.

A shared room can be lovely.

It can also become the main thing you remember.

Before booking, find out what shared actually means.

Two beds? Three? One bathroom for four people? Separate beds or one very optimistic king?

Ask.

Sleep affects everything.

So does knowing where you can put your suitcase.

NOTE 04ThailandAugust 2026

Protect your peace.

A private room is one of those upgrades that can change the whole retreat.

You spend all day with people. Meals together. Classes together. Excursions together.

Then you go back to your room and it is yours.

No maneuvering around someone else's toiletries. No suitcase exploded across the floor. No negotiations over lights, alarms, air conditioning or shower time.

You can close the door.

Take a shower. Read. Call home. Sleep. Stare at the ceiling for an unreasonable amount of time.

A lot of people arrive after months or years of taking care of everyone else.

A private room gives you a small piece of territory where nobody needs anything from you.

NOTE 05Chiang MaiSeptember 2026

Chiang Mai is bigger than it looks.

A retreat can say Chiang Mai and still be an hour from Chiang Mai.

Old City, Mae Rim, Hang Dong, Samoeng and the foothills all have a different rhythm.

Before booking, look at the actual location.

Ask how long the airport transfer takes. Ask whether you can walk anywhere. Ask whether Grab reaches the property.

A pin on the map tells you a lot.

A winding paved road passes through dense green forest and roadside flowers.
NOTE 06Chiang MaiOctober 2026

Stay far away.

Some of the best places around Chiang Mai are nowhere near the part of Chiang Mai most visitors know.

Out past the cafés and traffic are rice fields, mountain roads, villages and properties where the evening plan becomes watching the light change.

You may not be walking out for an iced latte.

The nearest 7-Eleven may no longer qualify as nearby.

People linger after meals. Phones become less interesting. The property becomes part of the experience.

Distance can be part of what you are paying for.
